My chosen image

Eisenstaedt was a Jewish German and actually took a photograph of a meeting which involved Adolf Hitler and Joseph Goebbels, where Goebbels actually scowled for the photograph when he learned that Eisenstaedt was Jewish. Eisenstaedt then moved to the United States.

Eisenstaedt then worked for Life magazine and was around on V - J Day taking photographs for the magazine. He was taking photographs of whatever caught his eye, until he saw a Sailor dressed in black kissing loads of women that he didn't know. He followed this man until eventually he kissed a nurse that was dressed in all white. He immediately took the photo because of the contrast between the 2 people.

Alfred Eisenstadet, V-J day in Times square, 1945

This photograph is a black and white film photo taken on the day that World War 2 ended. The main focus of the image is the Sailor and the Nurse kissing in the centre, however there are also a lot of onlookers in the background that are important to this image.
The image uses the rule of 3rds, as the couple in the photo are both completely in the centre column and the couple’s faces are on the top right intersection point, making it a very common place for the viewers to look first. The lighting in this photograph is all available light as it was only a quick snapshot.

The mood of this photo is very happy and cheerful and was at a time when everyone in Times Square was celebrating the end of the war. The joyful emotion that surrounded the people on that day clearly shows through this photograph because of the happy expressions on peoples faces and the peaceful attitudes of the people involved. The spirit of the image is very uplifting and hopeful and seems to be very inspiring for soldiers fighting in wars today. The people that view this photograph in the present day will feel more sympathetic when looking at it because of the war that is going on at the moment and they will also feel sorrow for the people that were lost in World War 2, but also thankful because the soldiers fought for them. It gives a sense of hope for peace in the present day and makes the viewers realise that peace will come eventually.
With Eisenstaedt being Jewish, the viewers realise that he would have had an emotional/hard life with this war and this photograph shows a sense of relief and joy for him on the day. The people in the background of the photo make this image successful just as much as the two main people do themselves. This is because of the expressions on their faces and also how they appear to have all stopped to watch this moment. However the couple are definitely the main focus in this photograph.

MY POSTER

I chose to find different newspaper articles from world war two to make into a collage for a background and then I wanted to keep it simple and just write the name, date and photographers name.
